Seward Forest Papers [manuscript], 1833-1974.

Papers of the Seward and Dunn families contain correpondence of John H. Dunn and Robert Merritt Seward and correspondence of Walter M. Seward with his mother and with the managers of his farm in Triplett, Va. Finances, local news, a lingering illness of his mother's, and the daily and seasonal routine at the farm are the chief topics. Seward's medical practice in New York city generated an 1888 patient ledger, and letters from his patients and some from insurance companies. There are also notes from a University of Virginia chemistry class taught by John w. Mallet. A law suit, 1910-1911, over Brunswick Co., Va. land holdings produced a large amount of correspondence, particularly with Seward's attorney, E.R.F. Wells of Norfolk. The collection also contains his will, a transcript of the above case, medical school notebooks, a daybook, 1892-97, and daily calendars, 1897-1914, from his practice. Of interest is a letter, 1871, from a prison inmate. There is also a farm journal, 1857-1888, with farm records, births, marriages and deaths, chiefly of the Dunn family. Papers of Seward Forest naturalist John B. Lewis, contain correspondence, checklists of plants and birds, work books, a card index of plants, and newspaper columns on nature topics. M. L. Fernald is a correspondent. Papers of Seward Forest director and University of Virginia Associate Professor of Forestry Alfred Akerman contain correspondence; papers as professor of forestry at the University of Georgia and with the Virginia Forest Service, 1921-1926; writings including pamphlets, articles and letters to the editor; papers as a U. Va. professor including notes, examinations and correspondence; and biographical material on Walter M. Seward and Robert Sharp. Correspondents include David C. Barrow, George F. Peabody, C. S. Sargent, and C. A. Schenck and his brother Clement Akerman. Papers of Seward Forest document the daily operation of the Forest and include information on personnel, lumber sales and sawmill operations. Directors Alfred Akerman and Guy Estes are principal correspondents. The effects of the Depression and World War II are documented by correspondence concerning employment, rationing, effect of the draft and wartime government regulations. Of interest is the World War II correspondence of Akerman and crewmember Ervin H. Wright with the 29th Inrfantry Division, later killed in action in Normandy on D-Day. Photographs of the forest and personnel are also included.
